Take a half day horseback ride through the beautiful countryside
of the Hurunui Gorge. View vast expanses of flat farm land, braided
river bed and the Balmoral Forest. If you are lucky you may see
a trout lazing in the crystal clear water of the river.
Ride past the deer paddocks and up pig creek where occasionally
you might see a wild boar.
All rides are guided by experienced friendly guides and suitable
mounts are available for all riding abilities.
Location
The location for your horse trek is Waitohi Downs - approximately
1 1/4 hours from Christchurch. Turn off highway 7 in Waikari
and take the Hawarden Rd. At the stop sign in Hawarden, go straight
over into Lake Sumner Rd. Follow this for approx 11 Km's. Turn
right into Powers Rd and continue until the end of the tarseal.
Turn left onto the gravel rd. Take first right and next left
- at the end of the road lies Waitohi Downs, the home of Alpine
Horse safaris.
What to bring
You will need to bring:
· Long trousers
· Warm jersey or parka in winter
· Sturdy foot wear, leather if possible .
· Your camera for those shots you just don't want to forget.
Restrictions
No experience is needed! There is no guarantee on good weather.
Safety
Horses suited to all abilities are available. All rides are guided
by experienced capable friendly guides.
