Your ZEALANDIA experience includes an exciting exhibition and a walk in the ever-changing sanctuary valley.

Entering the exhibition is like arriving on another planet: New Zealand 1,000 years ago. Witness the sudden arrival of humans, and the devastation we wrought, as an extraordinary sound and light show on an 11 metre screen immerses you in the 800 years of environmental destruction that ripped New Zealand’s fragile ecosystems apart.

ZEALANDIA is home to over 20 species of birds found nowhere else in the world, including the highly intelligent kaka (bush parrot), the tuneful tui and the colourful kereru. It is also one of the few places on mainland New Zealand where you can see some of our rarest species: Saddleback and hihi, back from the brink of extinction and the highly-endangered North Island weka.

Locals sometimes refer to ZEALANDIA as 'Jurassic Park'. Perhaps it's because of the unique mammal-proof fence. Or perhaps it's because this is the only place on mainland New Zealand you can see our most famous 'living fossil' - the tuatara! Over 200 of these prehistoric-looking reptiles now call the sanctuary home.
