RANGITOTO ISLAND FERRY After a short scenic cruise across the harbour you’ll find yourself at the base of the dormant volcano that has become an icon of T?maki Makaurau. A gentle climb through lava fields will lead you to the summit in approximately one hour. Allow extra time to explore the lava caves on the way back, or see the historic bach community near the wharf. WHAT CAN I DO? Summit climb – The Summit Track is the most popular walk on Rangitoto, winding through lava fields and native forest to the peak for 360 degree views. Lava caves – Explore the island’s lava caves, about 45 minutes into your Summit Track journey. Located 200 metres from the summit on the eastern side. Beaches – Mckenzie Bay and Beacon Lighthouse – ideal swimming and picnic spot, view the iconic lighthouse. WHAT TO BRING Walking shoes, sun protection and warm layers, the weather can be changeable. As there are no shops on the island, bring a picnic lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Remember to take any rubbish with you when you leave. Visitors can freedom walk on the formed tracks to the summit in approximately one hour, taking time to pause at lookouts along the way
